105-year-old celebrates milestone

A resident of Rutherglen in Glasgow has staked a claim to the title of 'oldest resident' as she celebrates her 105th birthday.

Elen Rabi has lived at Bupa's Ruthergeln Care Home since January 2012 and claims her longevity in life is down to having a sweet tooth.

She celebrated her birthday with an afternoon event attended by residents, friends and her brother Alec.

Elen was born way back in 1910 and began her working life as a simple cobbler, making and fixing the shoes of her local community.

Later on in her life, she worked as a shopkeeper - a job that she adored as she loved interacting with customers. Her true passion also shone through in this role - shopping.

Elen married her husband Ernest and although they never had any children, they filled their home with animals and at one point owned three cats and three dogs.

She has also spent a large proportion of her life getting involved in charity work, becoming a prominent member of her local church community and arranging events to raise money for numerous good causes.

Ann Proven, Activity Coordinator at Bupa’s Rutherglen Care Home, said “Elen is a charming resident to have with us at the care home. She is full of stories about her days as a shop keeper and all of the interesting people she used to meet working there.

Everyone was absolutely delighted to help her celebrate her big day and it was lovely to have the Minister come along and join in with the festivities. Of course, Elen was particularly excited about her cake.

Turning 105 is such a fantastic achievement and we’re all so proud of Elen.”
